Millions who live along the Citarum River basin area are exposed to deadly risks from its contamination. Waste volume that enters Citarum River often quadruples, and sends along floods to neighborhoods. From textile wastewater, plastic and rubber waste, to chemical wastewater, often dwells residents’ houses and fertile soil used by local farmers. Diseases become inescapable: from dengue fevers, diarrhoea, pneumonia, to risk of stunting. It was calculated that diseases linked to Citarum River’s contamination cost roughly 23% of West Java’s Social Security Administrator for Health (Indonesian: BPJS) annual budget.
Rowing wooden boats, in one day 70 waste pickers cleaned a total 5.600 kilograms of waste under Pak Indra’s supervision. With simple personal protective equipment, these waste pickers take the risk of Citarum River’s water, contaminated by precarious chemicals and heavy metals. For them, this contamination is a risk worth taking, for the sake of their families and communities who live in the river basin.
