Mr. Sukam is an environmental warrior and the father of four children. Every day, he rides tens of kilometers to deliver his children to school by motorcycle only. Therefore, Mr. Sukam has to spend a lot of money on transportation fees. 

Now, his children are in high school, junior high school, primary school, and kindergarten. They persist with unwavering determination to attend school, embracing the long journey as a stepping stone toward their dreams.

As students, they also need proper educational support facilities. They wish to attend school with proper uniforms, bags, books, and shoes. For them, it is a blessing since it is not easily attainable. Their parents dedicated their lives to waste management, and tirelessly strive to provide for the family. Every effort they make is driven by unwavering commitment to support their children's education and ensure that all their fundamental needs are met.

Children of environmental heroes have the right to receive a quality education. Mr. Sukam's children are quite lucky. They have access to education, even though their circumstances may not be ideal. Beyond that, there are still many young environmental heroes working in the waste sector who do not have the chance to have an education.

Waste to Dream

Mr. Sukam, a true environmental hero, has dedicated his entire life to tackling the daunting issue of marine debris at Pulau Merah Beach in Banyuwangi. As a loving father of 4 children, he relies on waste management to provide for his family. Despite his remarkable efforts in handling ++800 tons of waste, Mr. Sukam continues to toil tirelessly to improve the well-being of his loved ones. Although his income remains low, he persistently works towards meeting the basic necessities for a decent life. It is truly remarkable that while struggling to have a proper life, Pak Sukam selflessly manages waste that does not even belong to him, all for the sake of our environment. 

In the face of an escalating problem, more and more waste ends up in the sea. Mr. Sukam and his dedicated friends at Emvitrust tirelessly strive to enhance the waste management facilities and infrastructure in Pancer Hamlet. It is a tourist area on Pulau Merah Beach. Despite the challenges they face, they still rely on manual waste processing. Therefore, the amount of waste recycling remains disappointingly small.  As a result, Mr. Sukam's family and friends still have difficulty meeting their daily needs.

Eradicating Waste, Connecting Lives

Tricycle Brings Blessing

Millions who live along the Citarum River basin area are exposed to deadly risks from its contamination. Waste volume that enters Citarum River often quadruples, and sends along floods to neighborhoods. From textile wastewater, plastic and rubber waste, to chemical wastewater, often dwells residents’ houses and fertile soil used by local farmers. Diseases become inescapable: from dengue fevers, diarrhoea, pneumonia, to risk of stunting. It was calculated that diseases linked to Citarum River’s contamination cost roughly 23% of West Java’s Social Security Administrator for Health (Indonesian: BPJS) annual budget.

Rowing wooden boats, in one day 70 waste pickers cleaned a total 5.600 kilograms of waste under Pak Indra’s supervision. With simple personal protective equipment, these waste pickers take the risk of Citarum River’s water, contaminated by precarious chemicals and heavy metals. For them, this contamination is a risk worth taking, for the sake of their families and communities who live in the river basin.

Sampan Harapan Remove Million Tonnes of Waste in Citarum River

Financial constraint almost makes Elsa and four of her friends drop out of school. Their parents' income as waste pickers is often only enough to cover their daily needs instead of paying the school tuition. As a result, several years ago, Elsa and other waste pickers' children had to go to school using uniforms with yellow stains, shoes that were too small, and ripped bags. This condition often makes Elsa and other waste pickers' children become the target of bullying, not only from their schoolmates but also from their teachers. Their school, which is supposed to be a safe place for them to learn, achieve a better future, and get out of the poverty line, becomes their unsafe place and drops their mentality. 

Most of the waste pickers in Indonesia are informal workers who do not have health insurance. They work from morning to night with very minimal wages. In fact, the informal sector collects more than 1 million tons of waste annually, or about 15% of the total managed waste in Indonesia.

Bening Saguling Foundation (BSF) is established to empower waste pickers and save their children. Not only providing jobs for waste pickers, but BSF also helps their children by providing school needs such as pocket money and better school supplies. Unfortunately, not all waste pickers' children are as lucky as Elsa. There are still so many waste pickers' children who cannot be funded by BSF. They often end up dropping out of school and getting married early.
